Ever since I got Windows 7 Professional on my computer at work, I had severe troubles with even the most recent OpenVPN installation. OpenVPN would connect nicely, the output of openvpn ended with:
Tue May 18 18:09:25 2010 TEST ROUTES: 0/0 succeeded len=-1 ret=1 a=0 u/d=up Tue May 18 18:09:25 2010 Initialization Sequence Completed
The connection worked for some time. Maybe minutes, maybe seconds. Not really long. After that, nothing went through any more — no pings, nothing.
After following a lot of suggestions on the internet, I was still not lucky. I tried disabling the firewall entirely. I tried changing the netwoirk identification. I tried running the OpenVPN GUI in compatibility mode and as administrator. I tried the same for openvpn.exe. I disabled IPv6. I closed other applications connecting to the internet. Nothing helped alone.
I have a split solution which means it works better than before but still not flawlessly.
Firstly, I launch openvpn from the command line:
openvpn.exe --config myvpn.ovpn --script-security 2
Sometimes, the connections still stalls. It seems to me that closing all other applications that connect to the internet cures the problem instantly. Although this has not helped at all, before I started openvpn from the command line.
I hope, somebody finds a more satisfying solution to this issue. Until then, I work that way…
