On 2002-08-24, I participated in my first (and probably last) half marathon.
The start was scheduled for 1600 hours, thus the sun was still burning violently from the sky. It was awfully hot.
But nonetheless, I somehow managed to finish the 21.1 kilometres.
Here is the official data:
| Rank | 1918 (out of over 3000 starters) | |
|---|---|---|
| Time | 2:23.47 | |
My two cousins (both younger than me) and my uncle also participated in this
half marathon. My cousins were both faster than I was, which I think is quite
respectable, since they hardly prepared themselves for the event.
At least, they suffered from some pain the days after the marathon :)
At the beginning I made a big mistake: I thought about giving up, because my foot hurt a little bit and it was extremely hot.
But then I saw some other professional looking people sitting in the shadows
of some trees, exhausted. And I found my motivation again.
At about km 8, I met Peter, the guy whom you can see on the photograph and we
ran together. I must admit, that it was quite fun to talk a little bit while
running; otherwise it would have been very boring.
You cannot see it very well, but on the photograph on the left, I am extremely concentrated. I was very exhausted at that moment and we still had two kilometres to go; although we could see the finishline from this point. I found that a very cruel idea: You see the finish and know that you still have a long way to go (long is a relative term, of course).
In the end it was a good experience, although I consider running itsef quite boring.
